There must be hundreds of reasons to enjoy a good bedtime
story. I suppose it depends on your age. Or does it? Here’s three of my best
reasons, you can probably add dozens to the list.
A story at bedtime brings the family together. Mum or Dad sitting on the side
of the bed, or even snuggling in for a cuddle. Eager young hands clutching the
book as the pages are turned, hoping the story will go on that little bit
longer before lights out. This is the best time of day for many families. Jobs
and housework put aside for moments that will all too quickly pass as our
children grow up – always far too quickly.
I guess many parents and grandparents enjoy those moments. Possibly
brings back memories of their own childhood.
Of course, many children read to themselves at bedtime, and have done since way
back in the days of Winnie the Pooh, Rupert Bear and The Famous Five. (Some of
my favourites, by the way). Thanks to mobile phone technology, some of these
children make tents under the sheets, to read by torchlight. Whatever, this
brings me to my third chosen reason to enjoy a good bedtime story.
Imagination. Technology is harming the power of imagination. Computer games do
it all for you. A few twiddles of the thumbs and another enemy is blown to
pieces. Okay, they have their place, I understand. But, and it is a big but, it
is reading that creates mind images that lead children into other places,
different surroundings, and new adventures.
The Bedtime Adventures of Duggan the Dragon has all the ingredients to fire the
imagination. For a start, not everyone has seen a real live dragon that flies,
talks, breathes out fire, and above all, sneaking burgers, sausages and choccie
eclairs at every opportunity.
